Whether 100 years ago or today the Toronto Maple Leafs have always been in the conversation when discussing greatness. With their historic narrative being constantly revised and updated with new moments of raw talent and finesse we look back to 2017.
6 years ago the Centennial Classic was held outdoors at Toronto’s BMO Field to celebrate the 100th season of the Maple Leafs who were facing off with the Detroit Red Wings.
Rising to the occasion 1st overall draft pick Auston Matthews scored two goals capped off by a game-winner in overtime with just 1:20 left on the clock. To seal the close 5-4 victory in clutch fashion Matthews chipped a backhand shot past the goalie.
Definitely one of the best moments in hockey I’ve ever experienced. It’s pretty special Matthews reflected after his big-time performance and 20th goal of his rookie season. For us to come out and get that win it was a pretty exciting game and people were on the edge of their seats there in the third period and overtime. It was just really fun to experience this whole thing.
